Originally from Co.Tipperary in Ireland, Stephen grew up playing squash at the early age of 9 after falling in love with the sport following his first junior clinic. He went to Rockwell College for high school and the Limerick Institute of Technology for college.
As a junior player, Stephen represented his local club, province and country as a member of the Irish junior national team. He was Irish junior national champion in 2003, competed for Ireland at the Home Internationals Tournament 2003-2006, played for eight consecutive provincial titles from 2001-2008 and won numerous titles and the British and Irish junior circuits. As an older junior, Stephen still competed at a high level in Ireland but was also on the Provincial and Irish schoolboys rugby team while on the Irish national squash team. With squash taking a little time away from the game of squash, Stephen went on to play rugby at the professional club and local province, Munster, in their academy system and junior team.
In Ireland, Stephen got his coaching start early at the age of 16, helping out with clinics and doing private lessons at his local club, Thurles squash club.
Stephen has been coaching in the US since 2010 when he moved here from Ireland. He is currently the Head pro at ACAC in Short Pump, Richmond, VA and competes at a high level in Adult tournaments all over the country.
In addition to his coaching in Richmond, Stephen joins us here in Cahrlottesville every Friday to coach lessons and clinics to both junior and adult players at MSC.
