All camp participants must be 13 years old by the opening day of the camp week of attendance. There are two exceptions:
1. Campers of 12 years of age (as of the first day of camp) may attend provided they have a sibling older than 13 attending the same camp week.
2. Local day campers who are coached by Mark Allen, Grant White or Dean Russel may be as young as 12 years old (as of the first day of camp).
Please note that our camp insurance policy does not allow us to make exceptions to the age rules that we have in place.
Recommended Playing Level for Campers
Camps directed by Mark Allen work slightly different than most others. The emphasis is on practice between players, rather than between coach and player. Coaches are there to coach. That is, to provide feedback and advice and to guide practice—to pull or push the participants into practicing at a consistently high level at all times regardless of whether or not a coach is in the court. This last point is paramount, as one of the chief goals of the camp is to instill good longterm practice habits in campers that will stay with them throughout their playing careers.
Given these criteria and goals, it is vitally important that the players participating are of a high enough level to drill and feed with and for each other. Many of our practices and conditioned games operate on the premise that all of the players on the court are capable of rallying down the wall on the backhand side—returning even the most challenging balls from the opponent straight out of the back corner. If a camp participant is not capable of this, then he or she will struggle all week long, a discouraging prospect for both the camper him or herself and the other players with whom he or she is working.
As a starting point, we strongly recommend that all participants should be a minimum of 3.0 level according to the new rating system from US Squash. This rating is listed in the main section of a player’s profile page when logged into the US squash site. While players will not be refused if they are below the 3.0 level, we encourage all players to reach this recommended minimum level before applying.
